IMPORTANT AGENCY UPDATES DUE TO COVID-19:

  • In accordance with the CDC and the Executive Orders from Governor, Greg Abbott, our agency has chosen to close due to Covid-19.  In order to keep our staff and their families safe, our staff will be telecommuting until further notice.  We ask that you contact staff via email with any questions or issues that you may have.  If this is not an option for your and you wish to leave a voicemail, please note that there will a delay in a returning voicemails.  You can find all of our staffs contact information by clicking Here
  • In light of the continued risk of exposure to the coronavirus, and for the safety of our staff , TFSC will continue working predominantly remotely.  Our office hours will be 8am - 2pm.  We highly recommend you to email staff with any questions or concerns (link above).  If you call the office and are unable to speak with staff, please make sure you leave a voicemail with your name, phone number and a brief message with your question/concern.
  • The "in-person" Continuing Education requirement has been waived until further notice.  You will still be required to obtain all 16 hours of CE.
  • ​​Funeral Home Operations

Throughout this health crisis, each government agency has collaborated with the various professional experts trying to interpret the different guidelines and recommendations in order to clarify those guidelines for their constituents. As a state agency, there is no possible method of addressing every scenario or situation that funeral directors, across this great state, may encounter.  As the governor has indicated funeral services, interment services and memorial services are viewed as church or worship services within his published minimum health standards located in his Re-opening Texas Report.  We cannot mandate the exact number of guests who can attend a funeral service at every licensed facility.  Therefore, each funeral home MUST evaluate their own unique surroundings and guest participation to determine how many people are appropriate in the funeral home establishment for a viewing/visitation and for a funeral service.  It is also up to each funeral home to dertermine the appropiate duration of viewing/visitation/calling hours, seating arrangements in the chapel/church, and use of facial coverings for the attending guests.  The Texas Funeral Service Commission will fully support each funeral director as they decide how many people can safely participate in any type of funeral service activity.

The mission of the Texas Funeral Service Commission (TFSC) is to protect the public from deceptive practices in the funeral and death care industry through a process of impartial enforcement, inspection, licensing and education in order to guarantee every citizen’s final disposition is conducted professionally and ethically.

Arranging for a funeral, cremation or burial is a major consumer purchase involving many emotional, religious and social considerations. As such, the TFSC requires the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct from the funeral and death care industry.

The TFSC serves the public of Texas and is accountable to the public. The TFSC strives to be responsible, ethical and open in its actions, being ever mindful of its obligation to utilize state funds and resources in a cost effective and efficient manner.

The TFSC performs two primary services – Licensing and Compliance. The Licensing Division reviews individual and establishment applications to ensure that licensees meet the standards and qualifications set by statute. The Compliance Division investigates complaints against licensees and inspects establishments to ensure compliance with regulations. 

Any individual who has concerns regarding the Commission or its services should write to the Executive Director, who is the agency’s designated customer service representative. If the Executive Director is unable to resolve a concern, it will be referred to Commissioners for resolution.
